Learn More About Harbr’s Latest Feature Release: Tasks

Gary and I founded Harbr in 2017 to power the world’s data products. We were tired of seeing poor business outcomes from investments in data manufacturing without a similar investment in data productization.

Since then we’ve built the Harbr Data Commerce Platform, secured some of the most innovative data businesses in the world as customers, and learnt a lot about how to deliver real-world commercial outcomes from data. So today we’re delighted to announce our latest innovation, a new feature called Tasks that allows our customers to deliver higher value data products to their customers, increasing revenue and accelerating business outcomes.

Our customers use our platform to create data commerce experiences that optimize their commercial interactions with their customers. The platform includes data productization workflows, a data storefront/marketplace, and an automated export capability. But what makes it unique is combining those capabilities with collaboration environments called Spaces and the ability to create new, customized data products.

We built Spaces to allow multiple users to work on data in secure environments where the data cannot be removed, bridging the divide between data suppliers and data consumers. Spaces contain open-source tools including Jupyter notebooks, R-Studio and Superset, all powered by on-demand compute resources that keep costs low. They’re now used for a range of use cases including developing and testing prototype products to find product market fit, enabling instant on-platform trials to accelerate sales cycles and delivering hands-on support to improve the customer experience and reduce churn.

One of the biggest use cases we’re seeing for Spaces is users collaboratively developing code or models to create higher value, customized data products. For example, we have users executing API-based models to enrich their data with new values. Others are writing custom code to join and filter multiple data products to get the precise outputs they need. The platform has always had the capability to turn those outputs into new data products, so they can be discovered and used by others. With Tasks, we’ve taken the next step and added the ability to make those products auto-update without any manual effort.

Doing this is really straightforward. There’s a neat process to transform the code or model – we support Python and SQL – into a reusable code asset. The code asset can then be set to automatically execute on either a scheduled basis, or when the input data products update. The platform then automates the execution of the code and keeps the new data product up to date. This can also be used in combination with the Export feature to build fully-automated data product transformation and distribution pipelines to any cloud. Automating and streamlining work that would otherwise take weeks and require ongoing manual effort.

The Tasks feature makes it easier, faster and more cost-efficient to create higher value, customized data products at an industrial scale. We’re excited to see how our customers, and their customers, use the feature to deliver dramatically better outcomes, unlocking new use cases that weren’t previously possible at any meaningful scale.
